ModeFlip
Your day, your modes.
ModeFlip switches your phone's settings by mode β for example Sleep, Work or Meeting β when a time, a calendar event, a Bluetooth device or the charger says so, or when you tap it. When the mode ends it puts back only the settings it changed itself.
Everything ModeFlip reads and stores stays on your phone. ModeFlip does not request the internet permission, so it has no way to send anything over the internet by itself. There is no account, no sign-in, no server of ours, no analytics and no crash reporting. basilbase receives nothing from the app.
ModeFlip holds no location permission in this version: it cannot find out where you are or read the name of the Wi-Fi network you use. One kind of data deserves special mention: when a mode is set to read text aloud, ModeFlip hands that text to the text-to-speech engine installed on your phone, which is a separate app.
INTERNET is on that check's forbidden list, together with every location permission, camera, microphone, contacts, SMS and accessibility.| Information | When it is read | What happens to it |
|---|---|---|
| The name (SSID) of the Wi-Fi network you are connected to | Never in this version. ModeFlip holds no location or Wi-Fi permission; Wi-Fi network triggers are planned for a later version | β |
| Your position (GPS or network location) | Never. ModeFlip holds no location permission | β |
| Calendar events: title, start and end | Only while a calendar mode is switched on: at each check, for events from one day ago to eight days ahead in calendars shown on your phone, skipping events marked as available rather than busy, and invitations you declined | Titles are compared with the optional keyword in your mode, in memory. Start and end times decide when the next check is scheduled. Nothing from your calendar is stored, and ModeFlip never writes to your calendar. |
| Paired Bluetooth devices: names and hardware addresses | When you tap "Choose paired device" | Shown to you so you can pick one. Only the address of the device you pick is saved in the mode. |
| Whether a selected Bluetooth device is connected | When Android reports a connection or disconnection, and when ModeFlip asks Android which headsets, audio devices and Bluetooth Low Energy devices are connected | Saved in a small connection record, only for devices you selected in a mode (see "What is stored"). ModeFlip does not scan for Bluetooth devices. |
| Whether the phone is charging | While monitoring runs for a charging mode | Used immediately; not stored |
| The current value of each setting a mode is about to change: ringer mode, media/ring/notification/alarm volume, brightness and automatic brightness, screen timeout, auto-rotate, the flashlight, and on Android 8β14 the Do Not Disturb filter and policy | Just before ModeFlip changes that setting | Saved as a recovery record, so it can be put back when the mode ends. Each entry is deleted once its setting has been restored. |
| The wallpaper's ID number (not the image) | When a mode with a wallpaper starts or ends | Used to tell whether you replaced the wallpaper yourself. ModeFlip never reads your wallpaper image. |
| The list of apps that have a launcher icon | When you tap "Choose an app" | Shown to you; only the package name of the app you pick is saved. ModeFlip does not hold the "query all packages" permission. |
| The voices of your text-to-speech engine | When a mode reads text aloud | Used to pick an offline voice in the app's language |
| Whether each access is granted | When ModeFlip checks a mode's health | Shown on the Health screen; not stored |
Everything below lives in ModeFlip's private app storage, which other apps cannot read.
| What | Why | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|
| Your modes: name, ready-made type, on/off, priority order, the trigger (schedule times and days, calendar keyword, Bluetooth device address or charging choice; a Wi-Fi network name only in a mode imported from a backup made with another version, where it is kept but not used), the actions and their values, the text to read aloud (up to 500 characters) and the package name of an app to open | So your modes keep working | Delete the mode, or use Settings β Delete local data |
| App settings: theme, language, the quick mode for the tile and widget, whether automation is paused or monitoring is on, which modes are active or were switched on or off by hand, and the IDs of the system Mode rules ModeFlip created on Android 15 and later | So your choices stay chosen and an active mode survives the app being closed | Settings β Delete local data resets them; uninstalling removes them |
| Recovery record: for each setting a mode changed, the value before and the value ModeFlip wrote | So ModeFlip can restore only what it changed, even after the app was closed | Each entry is deleted once its setting is restored; "Stop and restore" restores everything ModeFlip still owns |
| Copies of the wallpaper images you picked (the mode image and the return image), re-saved as JPEG at up to 2000 pixels on the long side | Android does not let apps reliably read your current wallpaper, so you choose the image to return to | Images that no mode and no unfinished restore needs any more are deleted when you use Delete local data or import a backup. An image you replace or clear in a mode stays in private storage until then, or until you uninstall. |
| Wallpaper record: the wallpaper ID number ModeFlip set and the names of the two image files | To know whether the wallpaper is still the one ModeFlip set | Closed when the mode's wallpaper is restored or released |
| Bluetooth connection record: for devices selected in a mode only, their addresses, whether each was last seen connected or disconnected, and the phone's restart counter | So a device that is still connected is not forgotten when Android closes the app; a restart marks every device as disconnected | Devices no longer used by any mode are dropped at the next Bluetooth connection change or restart |
What ModeFlip deliberately does not store: no location coordinates (it cannot read them), no history of Wi-Fi networks, no calendar titles or times, no contacts, no list of your apps, no log of when modes ran, no usage statistics and no copy of your own wallpaper.
Starred contacts. "Allow starred callers" in Do Not Disturb uses the starred contacts Android already manages. ModeFlip has no contacts permission and never reads your contacts.
When a mode that has text to read aloud starts, ModeFlip passes that text to the text-to-speech engine installed on your phone (for example Google's speech services or your phone maker's engine) through Android's standard text-to-speech interface. That engine is a separate app. ModeFlip only chooses voices the engine reports as working without a network connection; if your engine has no such voice for the app's language, ModeFlip does not speak and says so on the Health screen. Speaking stops after 60 seconds at most. What the speech engine itself does with the text is governed by that engine's own privacy policy.
On Android 15 and later, each ModeFlip mode is registered with Android as a system Mode rule under the mode's name, which is how ModeFlip applies Do Not Disturb and the grayscale, dim-wallpaper, dark-theme and always-on-display effects. Android shows these rules in its own settings. ModeFlip removes a rule when you delete its mode or use Delete local data. If a ModeFlip rule is still listed in your phone's settings after you uninstall the app, you can delete it there.
Each of those apps has its own privacy practices.
Export backup writes one file to a place you choose with Android's file picker. It contains your modes β including names, Wi-Fi network names, Bluetooth device addresses, calendar keywords, the text to read aloud, the package names of apps to open β your theme, language and quick mode, and the wallpaper images you picked. It does not contain recovery records, which modes are active, or system rule IDs, and every mode in it is switched off. Where the file goes is your decision; if you save it to a cloud folder, that service's privacy policy applies to it.
Import backup reads a file you pick, checks all of it in memory, and changes nothing until you confirm. Imported modes start switched off and automation starts paused. ModeFlip holds no storage permission: it can read and write only the files you pick.
ModeFlip switches Android's own backup off. The app declares allowBackup="false", and its backup rules exclude every storage area both from cloud backup and from device-to-device transfer. So Android does not copy ModeFlip's data to your Google account or to a new phone. To take your modes with you, use Export backup and Import backup.
| Permission | Why | Without it | How to withdraw it |
|---|---|---|---|
Foreground service, special use (FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE) | Keeps the charger watch running after you leave the app: Android does not tell closed apps when a charger is plugged in or out. It starts only from the open app β when you start monitoring, and again whenever you open the app while monitoring is on β and a notification is visible the whole time with a "Stop and restore" button. After a restart or a system stop it does not restart by itself. | Charging modes only work while the app is open | Tap "Stop and restore" in the notification |
Foreground service, media playback (FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACK) | Only while a mode's text is being read aloud, at most 60 seconds, with a notification | Text could not be read aloud while the app is closed | It ends by itself |
Calendar (READ_CALENDAR) | Only for calendar triggers; read-only | Calendar modes cannot run | Android Settings β Apps β ModeFlip β Permissions β Calendar |
Nearby devices (BLUETOOTH_CONNECT, Android 12 and later) and BLUETOOTH (Android 11 and earlier) | To list your paired devices and know when the selected one connects. ModeFlip does not request Bluetooth scanning. | Bluetooth modes cannot run | Android Settings β Apps β ModeFlip β Permissions β Nearby devices |
Do Not Disturb access (ACCESS_NOTIFICATION_POLICY) | To change the ringer mode, turn Do Not Disturb on and off, and create the system Mode rules and their effects on Android 15 and later | A mode that changes the ringer, ring or notification volume, Do Not Disturb or system effects does not start; the Health screen says which access is missing. Media and alarm volume work without it. | Android Settings β Do Not Disturb access (name varies by phone) |
Modify system settings (WRITE_SETTINGS) | Brightness, automatic brightness, screen timeout and auto-rotate | A mode with display actions does not start | Android Settings β Apps β ModeFlip β Modify system settings |
Change audio settings (MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS) | Media, ring, notification and alarm volume | β (granted at install) | Uninstall |
Alarms and reminders (SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM) | To start and end modes on time at schedule times and calendar event boundaries | Android may delay these checks; the Health screen says timing may be delayed | Android Settings β Special app access β Alarms and reminders |
Run at startup (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED) | After a restart: reschedule the next check and mark Bluetooth devices as disconnected. It does not start monitoring. | Timed modes would wait until you open the app | Uninstall |
Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS, Android 13 and later) | The monitoring notification, the active-modes notification with "Stop and restore", and the tap-to-open notification for an app | Charging monitoring cannot start, and the app-opening action is not shown | Android Settings β Apps β ModeFlip β Notifications |
Set wallpaper (SET_WALLPAPER) | The wallpaper action | β (granted at install) | Uninstall |
DYNAMIC_RECEIVER_NOT_EXPORTED_PERMISSION (ModeFlip's own) | Added by the AndroidX library; it only stops other apps from sending ModeFlip's internal broadcasts | β | β |
The flashlight is switched through Android's torch interface, which needs no camera permission; ModeFlip never opens the camera and takes no pictures.
ModeFlip holds no internet, storage, contacts, camera, microphone, phone, SMS, accounts, accessibility, notification-access, usage-access, location (precise, approximate or background), Wi-Fi-state or "query all packages" permission.
When a mode ends, ModeFlip puts back only the settings it changed and still owns. If you changed a setting by hand while the mode was active, ModeFlip leaves your value alone. ModeFlip cannot switch Wi-Fi, mobile data, hotspot, airplane mode, battery saver, Bluetooth, Location or NFC on or off; it opens the system panel for you instead. System Mode effects work only on Android 15 and later. Phones differ: some makers link ring and notification volume, and some stop background apps more aggressively.
If you uninstall ModeFlip, clear its storage, or withdraw Modify system settings or Do Not Disturb access while a mode is active, ModeFlip can no longer restore what it changed, and those settings stay as they are. Use "Stop and restore" first.
ModeFlip is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone.
Because nothing is transmitted to basilbase, basilbase holds nothing about you to access, correct or delete.
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and the updated text is published at the same address before the change reaches a released version of the app.
