DoSay
Say one sentence. It gets done on your phone.
software.basilbase.dosayThe short version. DoSay turns what you say into text on your phone and carries out the command there. Your voice is never recorded to storage and never leaves the phone. DoSay has no internet permission, no account, no advertising SDK, no analytics and no crash reporting. Notes, lists, reminders and the names you link stay on the phone.
DoSay's manifest does not request INTERNET. An Android app without
INTERNET cannot open a network connection; the operating system refuses. You can
confirm this on the Play listing's permission list or by inspecting the app bundle.
Speech recognition language packs (Vosk models, Apache License 2.0) are delivered by Google Play through Play Asset Delivery, the same way Play delivers the app itself. DoSay never contacts a server of its own. After a pack is installed, recognition works in airplane mode.
The only third-party code is the Vosk recogniser and Google's AndroidX, Jetpack Compose, Material, Room, DataStore and Play Asset Delivery libraries.
| Permission | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
RECORD_AUDIOMicrophone |
To hear your command, only while the DoSay card is on screen and says Listening. The audio is processed in memory and discarded; it is never written to storage or sent anywhere. Asked the first time you speak, after an explanation. Without it you can still type commands. |
READ_CONTACTSContacts |
To find the person you name in “call …”. The search runs on the phone. Asked the first time you ask DoSay to call someone. Without it, calling by name does not work; names you link yourself in Names and apps still do. |
CALL_PHONEPhone |
To place the call after DoSay has shown who and which number, with a three-second countdown you can cancel. Without it DoSay opens the dialer and you tap call. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONSNotifications |
A reminder arrives as a notification. Asked the first time you set a reminder. |
SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARMAlarms & reminders |
So reminders arrive on time. You grant it in Android settings; without it a reminder may be a few minutes late and DoSay says so. |
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED |
After a restart, puts pending reminders back. It starts no microphone and no session. |
ACCESS_NOTIFICATION_POLICYDo Not Disturb access |
To turn Do Not Disturb, silent and vibrate on and off when you ask. You allow it in Android settings the first time. |
SET_ALARM |
To hand alarms and timers to your phone's Clock app, and to ask it to dismiss an alarm. |
WRITE_SETTINGSModify system settings |
To change screen brightness when you ask. You allow it once on Android's "Modify system settings" screen, the first time you ask. DoSay changes only brightness and automatic brightness, reads the result back, and keeps the previous value in memory so you can undo it. |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_DATA_SYNC,
WAKE_LOCK, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE |
Added by Google's Play Asset Delivery library, which Google Play uses to download and unpack a language pack you asked for. DoSay itself runs no foreground service. Network state lets the library wait for a connection; it does not allow DoSay to connect to anything. |
software.basilbase.dosay.DYNAMIC_RECEIVER_NOT_EXPORTED_PERMISSION |
Added automatically by the AndroidX core library. A signature-level permission private to DoSay. It gives no access to any data. |
Optional special access you may grant in Android settings: the digital assistant role (so the side key or assistant gesture opens DoSay), notification access (so DoSay can read your notifications, see what media is playing and reply to a notification, only when you ask it to; nothing is read aloud or sent on its own), and “Modify system settings” (brightness, above). The accessibility shortcut (Android 11+) can open DoSay; DoSay is only a shortcut target there, not an accessibility service, and cannot see your screen. All can be withdrawn at any time in Android settings.
There is no internet, location, storage, photos, camera, calendar, account, SMS or call log permission, no accessibility service and no usage access.
These live in the app's private storage, which other apps cannot read. The last action is remembered in memory for up to 15 minutes so it can be undone.
Alarms and timers go to your Clock app, calls to your phone app, music controls to the app playing music, “play …” to your music app, new calendar events to your calendar app (you save them there), and “open …” opens the app you name. Those apps handle the request under their own privacy policies; DoSay passes them only what the command needs (for example the alarm time, or the search words for music).
Replies to notifications. When you say “reply to Anna …”, DoSay looks for the newest notification from that person or app that has a Reply button, shows you the text, and sends it only when you tap Send. The text goes to the app that posted the notification through that notification's own reply action, and that app delivers it under its own privacy policy. DoSay cannot see whether it was delivered.
Other apps sending DoSay commands. Off by default. If you turn on Allow other apps to send commands, automation apps such as Tasker can open DoSay with a sentence to run, under the same lock-screen rules. DoSay returns nothing to them. Shortcuts you create can send an intent (a signal with the action and optional text you entered) that other apps on the phone may receive.
Voice typing for other apps. Apps and keyboards that ask Android for speech input can choose DoSay. DoSay recognises the sentence on the phone and returns only the text to that app, which handles it under its own privacy policy.
Another speech app (optional). Off by default. If you turn on When no language pack: use another speech app, or tap that option on the card, the speech app installed on your phone (for example Google's) listens instead of DoSay. That app may send your voice over the internet under its own privacy policy. DoSay only receives the text it returns; DoSay itself still has no internet permission.
DoSay turns Android backup off. Its data is excluded from cloud backup and from device-to-device transfer. Notes and lists can be shared as plain text through Android's share sheet when you choose to.
DoSay collects no data from anyone, children included. It is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children.
There is no server, so there is nothing for us to retain. In the app, Settings → Delete all DoSay data removes notes, lists, reminders, linked names and apps, shortcuts and history at once; history alone can be deleted in Settings → Command history, single items in their screens. Language packs can be removed in Languages. Uninstalling the app, or Clear storage in Android's app settings, removes everything.
If a future version ever collects or transmits data, this policy will be updated before that version is published. Updated versions are published at this URL with a new date at the top.
